This is a grammar book that is designed to help you learn the basics of PA-German. There are two spelling systems for the written form of Pennsylvania German. The spelling system used in "Vitt Du Deitsh Shvetza?" is the same as is used in "Di Heilich Shrift" the Pennsylvania German Bible and "Ich Kann PA Deitsh Shreiva" a Pennsylvania German writing workbook. This style was chosen because it is easier to learn if you know English.
This dictionary includes many of the most common words used by the Amish and native speakers of Pennsylvania German (also known as PA-Deitsh or Pennsylvania Dutch). The spelling is the same style used in "Di Heilich Shrift" the Pennsylvania German Bible and "Es Nei Teshtament" the Pennsylvania German New Testament, as well as the Pennsylvania German workbook "Ich Kann PA Deitsh Shreiva". For anyone wanting to learn the Pennsylvania German language as it is spoken by the Amish today, this dictionary will be of great benefit.
All PA-German speakers are bilingual with the exception of small children. Knowing PA-German is not necessary for communication. Therefore this phrase book does not focus on travel phrases which might come in handy if you were traveling in a foreign country. The phrases and questions given in this book are common ones which can be used to ask a simple question, start a conversation or give an appropriate reply in PA-German. Languages can be an interesting and fun topic of conversation. Perhaps you can find a native speaker who is willing to help you with pronunciation. If you are a serious student of PA-German, this book will give you a good start.
